Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. While it had been an ancient capital with the name Thăng Long (rising dragon), it became the capital of French Indochina in 1887. It later became the capital of North Vietnam and, after the Vietnam War, of all Vietnam.
Hanoi is notable for traditional Vietnamese architecture like the Temple of Literature, French colonial heritage like the opera house, and very narrow townhouses.
